first date for me is usually over a game of pool or something other than a movie. movies are great, but you don't really get much time to get to know the other person. go-kart racing, ice skating, a concert... pretty much anything mobile. oh, and of course, a cup of coffee or a smooth drink (if you order johnny walker black on the rocks you get some brownie points).
